         Outreach & Ecumenism

 

ESL(English as a Second Language): ESL classes meet from 2:30-4PM on Sundays; Level 3+ meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8PM and Level 3+ meets on Tuesday morning from 10-11:30AM. Testing for new students will be Sunday, January 21 and 28 at 2:15PM in the school building. Do you wish to become a tutor? If so, training classes will be held the end of January. For details on any aspect of ESL, call Judy Kramer at 848-5370.

 

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Habitat builds solid houses for families, enabling them to make permanent, positive changes in their lives. Volunteers are needed to help with construction, gardening, food preparation and child care.  For upcoming projects, see below. For information on Habitat for Humanity International, click here  

HELPING HANDS: This service organization provides help in emergency situations. This may involve transportation to doctors, preparations of meals, running errands or sitting with an ill person. No financial aid is given and no nursing services are provided. Volunteers are contacted as needed; no group meetings are involved. Parishioners are urged to volunteer or contact the church office for help.

MERCY CENTER: The Mercy Center is a shared effort with other churches to provide meals to the homeless on Sunday evenings. Our commitment is the first Sunday of every month.

RESPECT LIFE: This group is active with the pro-life ministry in our parish and in the larger civic community.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: This benevolent group provides outreach service to the poor of the parish and community. They have monthly food drives and assist those in need with funds derived from contributions.  Click here for meeting info!

UNITED MINISTRIES: Our parish supports United Ministries in numerous ways throughout the year including tithing from our Outreach Program. This organization in downtown Greenville works with the needy to provide food, housing and other essential family needs.

Prince of Peace is involved in many more ecumenical efforts including Eastside Crisis Center, Faith Communities United, Greenville Free Medical Clinic, and Meals on Wheels. Please contact the parish office for more details.

Habitat For Humanity

The 2006 Habitat Build begins September 14, 15 and 16 and most Fridays and Saturdays thereafter. As this is a partnership of several area churches, Prince of Peace will be the prime “contractor” on September 29 and 30. While we encourage as many volunteers as possible to come out that weekend, you are also welcome and needed on any of the other weekends. Please contact Wally Buser 268-2125 or wally7b@charter.net to let us know when you are available so we may plan accordingly.


                 

United Way Helpline needs volunteers to direct callers to agencies that can assist them with rent, food, etc. Training provided. One 4-hour shift per week (flexible). Call Elizabeth Cleveland at 467-3548.

Piedmont Women's Center: If you have a desire to help women in crisis, either as a receptionist, counselor, or assisting with other volunteer duties, please call Tricia at 244-1434.

St. Francis Hospital Hospice needs kind-hearted, compassionate individuals to volunteer their skills.  Call 233-5300 for more information. Visit our Website at www.st.francishealth.org

Interim Hospice is offering the Transitions Program to patients with a life limiting illness and to their families.  They need 20 volunteers who will offer support, friendship and respite. This program is for those who are still receiving aggressive treatment and are not Hospice appropriate.  Call 1-800-758-4966.

Southerncare Hospice needs caring volunteers.  For more information, call 864-989-0344 or 1-877-486-6721.

Catholic Charities needs volunteer tutors for "at risk to fail students" on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at Brookhaven and Westview Homes.  Also, a Receptionist Volunteer is needed at Catholic Charities in their new offices on Douthit Street in Greenville. Call Sr. Margie Hosch at 242-2233, if you can help.

Meals on Wheels needs volunteers to help provide hot noon-time meals to housebound residents around Greenville, Taylors & Greer. Call Meals on Wheels (233-6565).

The Center for Developmental Services needs volunteer drivers to assist in their services to persons with developmental needs.

The Ronald McDonald House is currently seeking volunteers for a variety of tasks.  This charity serves families whose children are being treated in local hospitals.

Place of Hope needs volunteers Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings to assist with front desk duties (answering phones, giving out supplies, etc.) Call Bruce Forbes (232-6463, ext. 23) for information. 

Greer Free Medical Clinic is in need of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, EMTs, patient screeners and translators.  For more information, contact Sharon Youkey (286-3749)

Birthright of Greenville needs infant clothing to size 24 months, baby blankets and maternity clothes. Please leave any donations in the designated kitchen cabinet in the church or PAC. 

United Ministries Learning Center needs volunteer drivers, Math and English tutors, and child care helpers on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  For more information, call John Hoppe at 232-6463, Ext. 32.  Also, we are seeking volunteers for our Adult Education Program. Training is provided. For more information, call Carolyn Brown at 242-0917, Ext. 12.

United Ministries has two pressing needs for volunteers. Place of Hope, the day center for homeless, needs two at the check-in desk on Monday mornings from 8-11AM. The Employment Readiness Program needs someone on Tuesdays to present orientation to Employment Readiness from 9:15-11AM. Call Claire Winkler at 232-6463, Ext. 12, if you would like more information. St. Vincent DePaul seeks to serve the poor through personal involvement.  Volunteers are needed.
